Day 220: 08-11-10 Silver & Turquoise Bracelet

Just focus 100% of your energy on telling great stories, being passionate about your work, on making something that is magical and special, and you’ll do a better job than you ever would trying to chase the market.
- Scott Bourne

I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out where my passion lies. When it comes to photography, I have been learning and exploring for years, and i only know a few thinks… in the studio, I can make a great technical product shot and killer portrait on a seamless white (for clients, never featured on this blog). I love bokeh and prefer my photos when using a fast lens, wide open, with natural light, and my favorite subject is usually animals.

Day 282: 10-9-10 Puppy Dog Eyes Where should I go in the future? Should I continue this exploratory documentation of my life, or perhaps find a focus? Maybe start a project? Here are a few week or month-long project ideas:

  1. Food I made
  2. Changing of the leaves
  3. Nature macros
  4. Portraits
  5. Jewelry
  6. Body parts
  7. Self-portraits

I might try them all at some point… my goal is to find that special, magical spark- something that defines my work.

Random Friday Night

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Weekends don’t count unless you spend them doing something completely pointless.
- Bill Watterson

Pointless, maybe… Relaxing, definitely. Sometimes you just need to hang out, play with the animals, chat with friends, sip on adult beverages. On a Friday night, it is the off-switch between the hectic work week and the weekend. Of course, I post this on a Monday- maybe in anticipation of the coming weekend! ;)

My neighbor has two dogs. One of them says to the other, “Woof!”

The other replies, “Moo!”

The dog is perplexed. “Moo? Why did you say, ‘Moo’?”

The other dog says, “I’m trying to learn a foreign language.”

At first when we got the Angels, Betty wanted to play with them and chase them around… now she has learned that chickens are friends, not food! (At least when they are our chickens, alive with feathers and all…) Now she lets them peck at her (they seem to find a lot of treats in her fur) and she keeps watch so that no foxes, bears, hawks, or anything else can get them! I said before that the Angels hadn’t started laying eggs yet, maybe because they are enjoying being mothered and don’t care to do it themselves? ;)

“It’s only when we truly know and understand that we have a limited time on earth – and that we have no way of knowing when our time is up – that we will begin to live each day to the fullest, as if it was the only one we had.”
– Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

I feel like there has been a very weird energy enveloping the world recently. People keep talking about the end of the world and the crazy weather seems to be inching closer to The Day After Tomorrow all the time. There have been lots of deaths and tragedies- high-profile and low. I’ve gone to more wakes and funerals in the past couple years than I had previously in my entire life combined. I feel like I have been consistently stressed out for a long time now, with the only exception our wedding week and honeymoon.

Sorry about the morbidity, but it brings me to my point… we hear the cliche all the time phrased in so many ways- live like it’s your last day on Earth. I’m not sure that I agree with that per se- don’t be reckless and go spending all your money or endangering yourself or others. I do, however, believe that you should enjoy and appreciate your life as much as possible. Spend quality time with the people you love, drink some wine, when you have free time do something that you enjoy, only eat great food, snuggle up with your husband for an extra five minutes after your alarm goes off… I have definitely been bad at appreciating the little things recently, so it’s time to start using The Secret again to bring positive energy back into my life, and hopefully the lives of those around me!

Now here are some images that got me thinking about all this in the first place…

Coyne PR Tailgate Competition ft. Judge Joe Cahn

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

There has definitely been a lot of craziness in the office lately, but we took a break from it all yesterday afternoon to enjoy some time in the sun with a friendly tailgating competition. The Commissioner of Tailgating, Joe “Commish” Cahn came out to judge the competition along with Coyne PR‘s own Andrew Testa and Wayne Catan. The creativity and passion were evident- tons of delicious food and beverages, a fly-by by the “Goodyear Blimp,” and a surprise appearance and show by the Morris Catholic Crusaders’ cheerleaders made for a fun-filled afternoon!

Check out the rest of the photos on the Coyne Flickr page

“Business is never so healthy as when, like a chicken, it must do a certain amount of scratching for what it gets.”
- Henry Ford

Still no eggs… But I did read somewhere to be patient, and at the beginning, to think of the chickens as a hobby and don’t expect anything. They are so funny that for now, I am not too concerned about the lack of eggs (although that would be a nice bonus!) They are very social, and make me feel a little like Snow White- they will perch on my leg or the bench next to me and listen to me sing for a long time, occasionally clucking or pecking at my rings. Whenever they hear us come out of the sliding door, they comerunning around the corner of the deck to greet us (or ask, “What do you have for us??”)

Soon enough though, I hope to be asking them, “Are you sitting on a present for me??”

Nash Dancenter Fall Showcase

Friday, October 14th, 2011

I remember the first time I saw Lili dance… it was on video, played proudly for me in the Hirshenson’s living room not long after I moved out to New Jersey. It was a Viennese Waltz to the tune of Once Upon a December from Anastasia, and it was so beautiful that my eyes got misty. It’s been a few years and I have attended many dance showcases, but it is still really incredible to see Lili, my shy, beautiful sister-in-law leave any inhibitions at the door and get out on the dance floor. My only dance judging experience comes by watching Dancing with the Stars, but I deem that good enough qualifications and give Lili a 10! She danced a crazy spinny Samba with her partner Sergey Anisimov, a romantic Viennese Waltz with Brian Nash (owner of Nash Dancenter), and she and my graceful parents-in-law danced a fun group Samba!

Max the German Shepherd & the Football

“If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man.”

~ Mark Twain

Max started off his life as a family dog on the Island of Spice, Grenada. He seemed to prefer running off around the island causing trouble to playing family dog, and one day Luke found the dog and took care of him. Eventually, he found the owners but by that time, Luke had gotten attached and asked if he might be able to keep Max. They consented, and Max became Luke’s companion. When Luke came back to the United States he took Max with him, and left him in New Jersey while he finished Vet school in Minnesota.

Luke seems to pick up animals everywhere he lives, and in Minnesota he picked me up… I moved out to New Jersey in October and in November, Luke, Max, Martigan and I moved into the Fortress of Solitude. Max has since enjoyed the long walks we take him through the woods and by the river, and the fenced in yard we had built so he could stay outside all day if he wanted (which often, he wants).

Max is now about 10 years old, still playful as ever (he and Betty destroyed that football in a few games of tug-of-war), and enjoys his life and all his new furry and feathery siblings! He definitely has a good life, but I’m sure he would still like to escape the confines of our yard and his leash to chase squirrels, chipmunks and foxes, causing trouble all over our little island of Boonton…

Nothing Gold Can Stay

Beginning of Autumn in the Yard- First golden leaves

Nature’s first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leafs a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

- Robert Frost
