Tiny Mouse in a Shoe

This morning I was having my coffee and checking my email while Bailey played with her stocking toy at my feet and Martigan laid on my computer case. At the same time we all heard a squeal from the dining room and jumped up to see what it was. Bojangles had a tiny mouse in his mouth! Clearly Bo learned how to catch a mouse, but then he had no idea what to do… he just dropped it and continued to play with it and after a few seconds it got away again and ran under the radiator.

A little while later while I was tidying the kitchen, Bo started poking at an empty paper towel roll that had fallen out of the recycling. I looked into the tube and there was the poor little mouse, quivering in fear. I grabbed the tube intending to bring it outside, but the mouse ran out right away to continue his attempted evasion. It started to go down the stairs so I tried to trap it in a corner and grab its tail, but alas it was a very fast little mouse! It made it all the way down the stairs by the shoes, then I had it trapped. The cats had given up at this point, by the way.

I tried to trap it in a corner again to grab its tail, but it kept running around my hands… that’s when I came up with the brilliant plan to turn the shoes on their sides and try to get the mouse to run into one. After a few minutes, he finally ran into one of my Aasics running shoes! I told him to stay in the shoe while I switched out the 50mm for the 105mm macro, and then brought my new friend outside. I got these shots before he made a crazy leap out of the shoe at me – I screamed and started laughing as the mouse freed himself from this crazy chase!
