The Island Animals

“Ah, summer, what power you have to make us suffer and like it.”

The weather has been up and down here in New Jersey, with some days excruciatingly hot and others rainy and cool. The days in between are perfect though… after the rain when the world has cooled down a bit but the sun is out.

The hot days have been tough on a bunch of the animals- they get tired, lazy, and as immobile as possible. The exceptions are the island animals… Luke brought both Max and Martigan back from the equatorial island of Grenada and they seem to do fine no matter the weather!

Cardinals

“The reason birds can fly and we can’t is simply because they have perfect faith, for to have faith is to have wings.”
― J.M. Barrie, The Little White Bird

Yesterday I showed you some of the bugs that inhabit our Rhododendron bushes… here are some of the birds. We have noticed Robins, Blue Jays and Cardinals flitting about in our yard (I swear, sometimes the yard seems so enchanted!) but the other day in the beautiful weather, there were more Cardinals zipping back and forth than ever. Luke thought there must be a nest in the bushes because that seemed to be their home base, and sure enough, he found one amongst the dense leaves. It turned out the birds were giving flying lessons to their baby bird!

Alas, I don’t have a full-frame telephoto lens, but caught these with my 105mm prime then cropped them in a bit.

Rhododendron in Bloom

“The earth laughs in flowers.”

On the sunny side of our house, the Rhododendron bushes bloomed a while ago. Now the bushes on the shady side are catching up…

June Garden Growth

I’ve barely had to water my plants… there have been scattered rain and thunderstorms pretty much every day for the last… however long. This mixed with bouts of sunlight, and my plants are edging on drowning, but somehow managing to thrive. I only planted a few seeds this year – basil, cilantro, parsley, chives, and thyme. I cheated a little bit and bought peppers and tomatoes that were already started, but my mint is still going strong from last year!

Bergen County Animal Shelter

Thursday, June 7th, 2012

As you may know, many dogs often sit in animal shelters for months or even years without being adopted – and, in some cases, those are the lucky ones. Far too many animals are euthanized yeach year when animal shelters run out of space. Even more heartbreaking, some animals get passed over by potential adopters time and time again because there’s a “cuter” dog in the next kennel. Those animals are constantly at risk of being deemed “unadoptable” and euthanized. Fortunately, a great picture can change a lot… an endearing photo online can be the difference between life and death for a shelter dog.

My coworker Michelle used to volunteer at the Bergen County Animal Shelter, so she recruited me and got permission from Coyne to take an afternoon to head over to the shelter. Goal: make sure that every adoptable dog at the Bergen County Animal Shelter had a pretty picture online to attract a forever home.

Here are a few sweet dogs that need a loving home!

Schewby

Schewby is a 13-year old pit bull terrier that loves people, and wants nothing more than a comfortable home and some nuzzling during her last few years. Older dogs can use all the help they can get, and her online picture is the reason we decided we had to help out!
